چکیده

With extensive applications in many domains, e.g., in postal address recognition, bank cheque recognition etc, Handwritten Chinese Address Recognition (HCAR) has attracted much interest recently. However, due to the large number in Chinese characters categories, irregular distortion and touching in handwriting, and high variations in writing styles, this task presents a big challenge in the community of pattern recognition. In this paper, we propose a novel three-stage approach to attack the Handwritten Chinese Address Recognition problem. More specifically, we propose the framework of coarse recognition, fine recognition, and verification as well as some new techiqniues tailored to each stage for HCAR. Coarse recognition is designed for speeding up the system; fine recognition exploits a novel recursive and enhanced segmentation-free holistical word recognition method in order to overcome the difficulties in HCAR; verification uses an important modified edit distance definition for further lifting the system accuracy. A series of experiments are conducted to evaluate the proposed novel system. The results demonstrate that our system outperforms other traditional methods in three real data sets.

Holistic Farsi handwritten word recognition using gradient features

In this paper we address the issue of recognizing Farsi handwritten words. Two types of gradient features are extracted from a sliding vertical stripe which sweeps across a word image. These are directional and intensity gradient features. The feature vector extracted from each stripe is then coded using the Self Organizing Map (SOM). In this method each word is modeled using the discrete Hidde...

A Word Matching Algorithm in Handwritten Arabic Recognition Using Multiple-Sequence Weighted Edit Distances

No satisfactory solutions are yet available for the offline recognition of handwritten cursive words, including the words of Arabic text. Word matching algorithms can greatly improve the OCR output when recognizing words of known and limited vocabulary. This paper describes the word matching algorithm used in the JU-OCR2 optical character recognition system of handwritten Arabic words. This sys...

A Hybrid Handwritten Chinese Address Recognition Approach

Handwritten Chinese Address Recognition describes a difficult yet important pattern recognition task. There are three difficulties in this problem: (1) Handwritten address is often of free styles and of high variations, resulting in inevitable segmentation errors. (2) The number of Chinese characters is large, leading low recognition rate for single Chinese characters. (3) Chinese address is us...

Holistic Verification of Handwritten Phrases

ÐIn this paper, we describe a system for rapid verification of unconstrained off-line handwritten phrases using perceptual holistic features of the handwritten phrase image. The system is used to verify handwritten street names automatically extracted from live U.S. mail against recognition results of analytical classifiers. Presented with a binary image of a street name and an ASCII street nam...

A New Method for Rotation Free Online Unconstrained Handwritten Chinese Word Recognition: A Holistic Approach

Most online handwriting word recognition (HWR) approaches proceed by segmenting words into isolate characters which are recognized separately. Inspired by results in cognitive psychology, holistic word recognition approaches provides another effective way to deal the problem of HWR. In this paper, we propose a new method for rotation free online unconstrained Chinese word recognition through a ...
